* The Earth treats us very well every day of the year so we should probably consider treating Earth very well every day of the year instead of just focusing on it one day per year since the Earth is the foundation of our existence.
* I'm not a big fan of Earth Day events that ask us to turn off our lights or stop doing things. I think people will reject environmentalism if it means we have to sit in the dark or stop using our computers. I think a better way is to highlight how we can do a lot of the same things in a smarter, more efficient and more sustainable way.
* I'm sick of the Republicans trying to hide what is going on so they can keep profiting from dirty businesses. They deny that business does much of anything that harms the environment when it is obvious there are abuses going on. Republicans deny abuses as long as possible and then if they are forced to do something, they make laws that are voluntary. Many Republican Administrations have put people in charge of environmental organizations and institutions who are former business lobbyists or executives determined to destroy or limit the organizations they are put in charge of. If you care about the environment, stop voting for Republicans. We can have a balance between the markets and the environments. We can conduct business while also protecting the foundation of our existence.
Regarding your last point, I'm not a big fan market fundamentalism. I support a balance between the market and democratic forms of government. The ignorance and contempt of the market toward the environment is one fo the big reasons I think we need a democratic government with the ability to trump market values ion favor of environmental values.
The market says companies should dump their waste in the rivers because it is the cheapest option. The market says fishing companies should maximize their short term profits by taking as many fish as possible even though it will lead to long-term fish shortages or extinctions. If there is a battle between the habitat for animals or a new parking lot, the market will always favor the parking lot.
We need a balance betweeen markets and democratic governments in order to protect and sustain the foundations of our existence.
