For all the protesting and opposition we saw during the War In Iraq, there sure is a noticeable silence as the Obama Administration escalates the War in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Even though Obama is dedicated to a more diplomatic approach to the region, he is still sending more troops to the region. He also has not slowed down the drone attacks in Pakistan.
The stated goal is to disrupt and defeat al Qaeda as they recruit, train and plan attacks on America and our allies. This sounds like a good goal, but a lot of planning and training is taking place in lots of countries around the world. It makes sense to go after the leadership of al Qaeda, but are we sure they are still in the region? Al Qaeda is a small presence in the region compared to the Taliban movement, the Pashtun tribal leaders, and the drug warlords we spend most of our time fighting.
It is true that a lot of religious fundamentalists are in the region who support the aims and goals of al Qaeda. These are some of the same people the United States once trained, armed, and encouraged as we tried to inflame and direct their religious violence toward the Soviet forces in Afghanistan.
Does the war in this region still have something to do with oil pipelines that are needed to get regional oil supplies to western markets?
