Listen to the U.S. Supreme Court Live: Oral Argument Audio and Schedule
The Supreme Court does not offer video to embed here. Its live audio plays on the Court's own website, linked below.
What Is This Feed?
The Supreme Court of the United States does not allow cameras in the courtroom, so there is no video feed to watch. It does stream live audio of oral arguments on its website, and that is the closest the public can get without a seat in the room.
During an argument, the Justices question the attorneys for each side. The Court hears about 70 to 80 cases a year, and those exchanges often show which issues the Justices find most important.
When Can I Watch?
Arguments are generally held on specified Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, from the first Monday in October through the end of April. The Court typically hears two arguments a day beginning at 10:00 am Eastern.
The Court's yearly calendar shows the argument days, and its hearing lists show which cases are up. Audio is posted later in the day, and transcripts appear that afternoon.
Why This Feed Matters?
Judges don't face voters the way legislators do, so public reasoning is a large part of what gives their rulings legitimacy. Hearing the questions asked in a case lets you test the final opinion against the argument that produced it.
Live audio is a recent step forward, and the debate over cameras in the courtroom continues. Whatever your view, the rule of law is stronger when citizens can follow how it is made.
