Colombia Reviews 2016 Peace Accord, Emphasizing Reconciliation
This week, on October 12, Colombia's government presented a formal review of its 2016 Peace Agreement with the FARC to the United Nations Security Council, just weeks before the accord's tenth anniversary. The presentation aimed to assess the agreement's successes and shortcomings and to propose adjustments for its continued implementation.
The Colombian government highlighted its commitment to upholding the constitutional and legal obligations of the Peace Agreement. They also emphasized prioritizing security, restoring state authority, and reinforcing the rule of law in conflict-affected regions. This review comes as the current administration seeks to adapt peace policies to the country's evolving security landscape.
While acknowledging gains in rural development and transitional justice mechanisms, the UN's top official in Colombia, Miroslav Jenča, noted that implementation has faced many challenges. He stressed the importance of fully implementing the accord, including proper funding, better institutional coordination, and protecting former combatants. More than 11,000 former FARC-EP members remain committed to reintegration, developing thousands of productive projects and cooperatives with state and international support. Source: un.org
