Fairtrade International to Update Standards for Global Supply Chains

Fairtrade International is preparing to update its core standards, aiming to make them more effective and practical for producers and businesses worldwide. This evolution responds to feedback from farmers and workers who indicated existing standards could be complex, especially with new regulations emerging globally. The revisions will encompass generic standards for small-scale producer organizations, hired labor organizations, and traders, alongside all product-specific agricultural standards.

The organization began consulting with producers on these updates in 2024, with public consultations scheduled for this year. The goal is to publish the new standards in 2027, with implementation beginning in 2028. Fairtrade International, which has been working for over 30 years to improve trade conditions, supports 1.9 million farmers and workers across 67 countries.

This initiative seeks to create a fairer and more just trade system that addresses the practical needs of farmers and companies. The updated standards are designed to offer better support to producer organizations, traders, and businesses as they navigate global supply chain challenges. Source: thenews.coop
