South Africa Declares New Grasslands National Park
South Africa's Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, David Maynier, officially designated the Grasslands National Park in the Eastern Cape on October 12, 2026. This new national park encompasses 10,225 hectares across 18 properties between Nqanqarhu and Rhodes. The declaration finalizes a statutory process, transitioning the area from a proposed protected environment to a formally declared national park under South African National Parks (SANParks) management.
This initiative represents the first national park in South Africa primarily established using a biodiversity stewardship model. Under this model, landowners retain ownership of their land while committing to agreed conservation and management arrangements. This innovative approach allows for compatible agricultural activities to continue alongside ecological protection.
The primary goal of the Grasslands National Park is to safeguard one of South Africa's least-protected biomes. It is also a crucial part of the Eastern Cape Drakensberg Strategic Water Source Area, which is vital for water security and regional biodiversity. WWF South Africa collaborated with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment and SANParks in coordinating the park's establishment. Source: atta.travel

By integrating local landowners through a biodiversity stewardship model, South Africa is demonstrating a path toward expanding protected areas while supporting communities. This approach fosters active peace by recognizing the interconnectedness of human well-being and a sustainable environment, securing vital resources like water and biodiversity for future generations.
