Brazil's National Council of Justice Trains Thousands in Biometric ID
Brazil Expands Biometric Identification in Justice System
Brazil's National Council of Justice (CNJ) recently completed a training initiative to enhance civil identification and documentation for individuals within the prison and socio-educational systems. The program, which concluded its latest online cycle on September 29, 2026, provided training to 4,637 professionals. Since 2023, more than 29,000 participants have completed these training cycles.
The comprehensive two-day program covered seven modules, addressing various critical topics. These included identification during custody hearings, voter registration processes, issuing national ID cards, regularizing CPF (individual taxpayer registry) numbers, and biometric data collection. This initiative is part of broader efforts to standardize identification procedures across different states, with continued training deemed essential by officials.
Practical improvements are already evident, such as in Mato Grosso do Sul, where the SERPJud platform now facilitates the issuance of birth certificates in a single day, a process that previously took two months. In Paraíba, the training has directly supported the implementation of biometric identification protocols. These steps contribute to strengthening democracy reform transparency by improving access to essential documentation and electoral processes for vulnerable populations. Source: biometricupdate.com
Why It Matters
This initiative demonstrates a tangible commitment to strengthening democratic participation by ensuring that all citizens, including those in the justice system, have proper identification. Access to official documents like ID cards and voter registration is fundamental for exercising civil rights and engaging in the democratic process. This kind of systematic approach to identity management helps build a more inclusive and transparent society.
