Fairtrade International Revises Standards for Global Producers
Fairtrade International to Update Core Standards for Ethical Trade
Fairtrade International is moving forward with plans to update its core standards, aiming to make them more practical for producers and businesses around the world. These revisions are a direct response to feedback from farmers and workers who found existing standards could be complicated, particularly with new global regulations emerging. The objective is to simplify and enhance the effectiveness of these standards.
The updates will cover generic standards for small-scale producer organizations, hired labor organizations, and traders, as well as all product-specific agricultural standards. Fairtrade International, an organization with over 30 years of experience improving trade conditions, began consulting with producers on these changes in 2024. Public consultations are scheduled for this year.
The revised standards are expected to be published in 2027, with implementation beginning in 2028. This initiative seeks to create a more equitable and just trade system, supporting 1.9 million farmers and workers across 67 countries by addressing their practical needs and the complexities of global supply chains.
Why It Matters
This initiative reflects a proactive commitment to fostering an ethical trade fair economy, demonstrating how established organizations can evolve to better support those who form the foundation of global commerce. By streamlining and strengthening standards, Fairtrade International helps ensure that markets genuinely uplift producers, promoting improved working conditions and fairer compensation. This dedication to an evolving ethical framework is vital for cultivating active peace through economic justice.
