The Story

India Champions Global Forest Restoration Efforts

This week, India presented its significant progress in forest and landscape restoration at the 28th Session of the FAO Committee on Forestry (COFO 28) in Rome. The nation highlighted its commitment to sustainable forest management and climate action, showcasing a robust approach to developing resilient forest landscapes. India's forest and tree cover has expanded to over 82 million hectares, covering more than 25% of its geographical area. The country detailed ambitious initiatives, including the Aravalli Green Wall project, which aims to restore approximately 6.45 million hectares of degraded land. Additionally, the MISHTI initiative focuses on restoring coastal mangrove ecosystems to bolster climate resilience and support local communities. India also shared its success in expanding its network of Ramsar Sites to 101, further demonstrating its dedication to environmental restoration. These efforts are crucial components of India's broader climate commitments, which include creating an additional carbon sink of 3.5 to 4 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent by 2035. Under the Bonn Challenge, India has already brought over 21 million hectares of degraded land under restoration, moving towards its goal of restoring 26 million hectares by 2030. ddindia.co.in
